Photos of Yukinori Maeda’s, ‘Light Deposit’ (2008), provided by the Center for Cosmic Wonder.  Tokyo’s Cosmic Wonder space just finished it’s new show ‘Light Construction’. Full review of the show is up at Tokyo Art Beat HERE. Yukinori Maeda, Yoshimi from OOIOO, Elein Fleiss, and Mike Mills participated.  After wandering around this space for some time, I decided that Yukinori Maeda has attempted to deify light itself. His works, and the works of the others in this show, seem part of a progressive discovery and worship of that deity.  At times ‘Light Construction’ felt like a bizarre exercise in cult aesthetics, invoking a psychic world where painting ninety-six rainbows for one’s own therapeutic pleasure, or drinking purple water was not only seen as an artistic ritual, but as a genuine celebration of spiritual power.
